SUMMARY:Virtual Seminar with Rishi Kamaleswaran: "Forecasting Patient Trajectories: Leveraging Irregularly Sampled\, Multimodal Time-Series for Clinical Foundation Models"
DESCRIPTION:Zoom link: https://duke.is/CompHealthSept2026Seminar \nAbstract\nAs in-patient environments generate vast amounts of heterogeneous data\, ranging from continuous physiological telemetry to sparsely sampled medical imaging\, there is a profound opportunity to translate this information into actionable clinical foresight. This talk will focus on the development of novel foundation models and transformer architectures designed to handle the temporal complexities of longitudinal hospital data. I will present three recent frameworks developed by our group: Clin-JEPA\, which leverages a joint-embedding architecture to forecast complex EHR patient trajectories without the need for per-task fine-tuning; CardioFM\, a multimodal foundation model pretrained on over 500\,000 hours of physiological data that provides unified representations for advanced tasks like non-invasive hemodynamic trending; and CXR-TFT\, which fuses irregular\, sparse chest X-rays with high-frequency clinical measurements to predict emerging lung pathologies before they are radiographically visible. Attendees will learn how these sophisticated temporal models overcome data sparsity and modality fragmentation to provide a predictive\, “whole-patient” view of hospitalized patients across the acuity spectrum.\n\nSpeaker Bio\nDr. Rishikesan Kamaleswaran is an Associate Professor at the Duke University School of Medicine\, holding a primary appointment in the Department of Surgery and secondary appointments in Anesthesiology\, Biomedical Engineering\, Electrical and Computer Engineering\, and Biostatistics and Bioinformatics. He also serves as the Director of Data Science and the Director of the Data Science and Informatics Module for the Duke Clinical & Translational Science Institute. Dr. Kamaleswaran earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Ontario Institute of Technology. His biomedical data science research program develops advanced machine learning architectures\, multi-modal clinical data fusion\, and time-series foundation models for critical care and high-acuity medicine. He serves as Principal Investigator on several major NIH R01 projects and is a Fellow of the Association for Clinical and Translational Science.

SUMMARY:Boyuan Chen Virtual Seminar: "Discovery Machines: From Pixels to Physics"
DESCRIPTION:  \nRegister (registration required) \nSeminar Abstract\nWhat if a machine could watch a video and write down the equations of motion? I’ll discuss our recent work toward this goal — systems that learn to discover the hidden state variables and governing dynamics directly from raw visual data. These discovered Neural State Variables and Neural State Vector Fields not only reproduce trajectories but also reveal the structure of these dynamical systems: equilibrium\, stability\, and chaos. The results suggest a path toward a self-driven AI scientist.\nSpeaker Bio\n\nDr. Boyuan Chen is the Dickinson Family Assistant Professor at Duke University\, where he directs the General Robotics Lab. He is affiliated with the Departments of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science\, Electrical and Computer Engineering\, and Computer Science. He also serves as the Strategic Advisor for Robotics and Autonomy in the Dean’s Office at Duke’s Pratt School of Engineering. \nDr. Chen received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Columbia University in 2022. Dr. Chen received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Columbia University in 2022. His research focuses on building Discovery Machines — machines that learn\, act\, and collaborate by discovering how the world works. His lab develops the arc of Embodied Intelligence in which machines sense through multiple modalities\, adapt by discovering and designing their own bodies and capabilities\, and connect by understanding how humans and other machines think and act. By taking a full-stack approach that spans both the “body” and “brain” of intelligent systems\, his group advances robotics\, artificial intelligence\, human–AI teaming\, and AI for scientific discovery. Inspired by natural intelligence in humans and animals\, his work explores new frontiers in adaptive\, multimodal\, and interactive autonomy. \nDr. Chen was named to ASME’s Watch List in 2025. His work has received numerous media reports and has been featured in outlets such as the New York Times\, Forbes\, Fox\, Fortune\, Science\, and the National Science Foundation. His research has been published in top-tier venues including Science Robotics\, Nature Computational Science\, NeurIPS\, ICRA\, and CoRL. \n\nAbout Virtual Seminars\nOur Virtual Seminar Series is a monthly event spotlighting the latest innovations in computational and digital health. SUMMARY:Edge an IoT-supported Intelligent and Augmented Reality: Promise\, Challenges\, and Solutions
DESCRIPTION:Professor Maria Gorlatova discusses mobile augmented reality (AR)\, which integrates virtual objects with 3D real environments in real time. AR is broadly expected to redefine how we interact with technology and the world around us. Yet current AR falls short of many of the expectations. Gorlatova presents a vision of multi-device\, edge computing-supported and Internet-of-Things (IoT)-integrated platforms for next-generation intelligent context-aware AR.
